Jack Rhodes: Community roots for magician to win Britain's Got Talent

Jack Rhodes, 26, from Ulverston, won the vote of the British public in Tuesday night's semi-final of the ITV talent show after performing an extreme card trick while locked in a box of dynamite.

Judge Simon Cowell said he was 'the favourite to win the entire competition' after performing in the second semi-final at the Eventim (Hammersmith) Apollo in London.

People across Cumbria have sent a wave of messages of support to the candidate including the Mayor of Ulverston Cllr Graham Scrogham who said: "He gels well with the public. He was able to show his true self on probably the biggest show on TV and gave a fantastic performance. I am sure I am echoing all of Ulverston's comments saying how proud we are and we are so pleased for him.

"It is a fantastic achievement and I truly wish him all the best."

St Mary's Hospice has also pledged its support to the magician and expressed excitement for his final performance. Jack has performed at previous fundraising events.

Mel Dixon, events manager for St Mary’s Hospice, said: "Like everyone locally, we have been rooting for Jack.

"He is a great lad and we are proud to see him representing the area. The rest of the UK is getting to see the skills he showcased when entertained the crowds ahead of our Walk to Remember, and we couldn’t be happier for him. It is always nice to see local people succeed but we are extra happy for Jack because his family have been consistent supporters and donors to the Hospice for a number of years. 

"We’re all hoping for another magical performance in the final."

On social media, readers of this publication have also wished the Kendal-born magician a stream of good luck.

Following his performance on Tuesday, Sue Slater said: "I thought he was amazing. He was clever, funny and very entertaining. Such a refreshing change, good luck."

Andrew Scrogham said: "Fingers crossed he wins top bloke and he only lives 5 miles away from me good luck Jack. Dalton's rooting for you."

Ann Storey said: "He was brilliant. I voted 4 times and was thrilled that he won."

He will be performing live on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm on Sunday June 2.
