A POPULAR town carnival will take place this weekend, with the new committee anticipating this years carnival will be the 'largest in some years'.

Maryport carnival 2024 will take place on Saturday, July 13 with judging taking place at 12pm in Fleming Square, following that the parade starts at 1pm.

The carnival is set to be a great family day ,with many parading throughout the town, with the carnival finishing opposite the wave centre, where there is a fair and activities for children.

There will be various new categories which  have been created this year which are set to bring a new feel to the event.

To date have been around 400 people entering the event, with it being anticipated to be the largest carnival in some years.

The outgoing committee expressed their retirement as such before last years event and advertised for the towns folk and interested people to step forward to help ensure the event continued.

The new committee of 10, all new, stepped up to challenge and are about to hold their first event.

Chairman of the new Maryport Carnival Committee said: "This is exciting times, but we know we have a high expectation to meet to meet the level of success of past carnivals.

“We have a fantastic amount of entrants this year which should see the parade being larger than the past few years.

"The mixture of new categories have attracted a brilliant response and should entertain everyone. We ask that those visiting the town for the carnival avoid parking within the town centre or the Carnival route and to make use of Mill Street Carpark.

"This is free for 2hrs and within a very short walking distance to the town centre and carnival route. Official road closures are in place from 12pm and we kindly ask those residents and business owners on the route to support the event by parking off the route for the period of the event.

"There will be a collection on the day, where people can help ensure the future of the carnival. This will be cash only this year. Please help by donating."
