A NEW outdoor events space for Maryport harbour is one step closer to being created, after plans were approved by Cumberland council.

In April, the authority submitted an application that 'seeks to re-use existing outdoor space at the harbour side to host events such as outdoor markets and local festivals' on land adjacent to Maryport harbour.

The proposals include a pop-up stage area, bar, outdoor seating, marquee space, market stall spaces, an internal bin storage area and re-landscaping of the area.

At a meeting of the Cumberland council planning committee yesterday, July 17, the plans were approved by members of the committee.

An officer's report said: "The proposals support the ongoing regeneration of Maryport which is one of the 'key service centres' within the former Allerdale borough area and its role as key tourism destination.

"The proposals would support the investment into the area to provide a dedicated space for events to be held. Subject to conditions, the character of the area and the amenity of neighbouring residents would be maintained."

One letter of objection raised concerns regarding the impact on neighbouring residents in relation to noise and upkeep of the area.

The officer's report went on: "General comment was made regarding the need to control the number of events and timing of events, accessibility of the site for all users and if the proposed bar would have sufficient capacity."

A design and access statement supporting the application previously said that the positioning of the bar and stage is aimed at reducing impact on neighbouring properties, with additional landscaping to 'provide a buffer to existing boundaries'.

Through the proposals, the council is aiming to revitalise the 'cultural vibrancy' of the town through providing a venue for a number of outdoor events.

Documents supporting the application said: "The proposal aims to revitalise the communal spirit and cultural vibrancy of Maryport by providing a dynamic and versatile venue for a range of outdoor events.

"Situated close to the heart of Maryport, the proposal seeks to enhance the local community’s access to open air recreational activities, cultural events and social gatherings."
