A WORKINGTON man has admitted possessing two kinds of illegal drug while he was already being investigated by the police.

Appearing before a district judge in Carlisle, 27-year-old Scott Hannon pleaded guilty to two allegations: possessing the class A drug cocaine with intent to supply and possessing class B cannabis, also with intent to supply.

He committed both offences on July 6 in Whitehaven.

Prosecutor George Shelley said the defendant was originally arrested in July last year but then released “under investigation.” His phone was then later seized as part of a separate investigation.

When police examined this, said Mr Shelley, it became clear that after his arrest and release Hannon was involved in further illegal drugs activity.

The prosecutor pointed out that the starting sentence for the offences admitted by the defendant was a three-year jail term, though that can either increase of decrease depending on the circumstances.

He told District Judge John Temperley that his sentencing powers for such serious crimes would not be sufficient.

Concluding the case, District Judge Temperley agreed with the prosecutor, telling the defendant: “You will get credit for your guilty please [entered] at the earliest opportunity, but these offences are too serious for me to sentence in this court.”

He remanded the defendant, who gave his address as Wastwater Avenue, Workington, in custody and sent his case to Carlisle Crown Court for a hearing on August 15.

The judge said his remand decision was made in the light of the defendant’s “numerous” previous offences while on bail.

He asked the Probation Service to prepare a pre-sentence report for the judge who will eventually pass sentence. The amount of drugs involved in the case were not revealed in open court.
