A NEWLY formed ladies rugby league team have said 'the sky is the limit' following a major plate win at the weekend.

After starting their first competitive season back in May, Workington Town Ladies RLFC brought home the 2024 RFL Women's plate on Sunday, July 21 after beating Leigh Miners 22-8  at Orrell St James.

Gaz Nicholson, Assistant Coach at the Workington Town Ladies said:  "It was a really proud moment, to be honest I don't think proud really does it justice.

"All the hard they have put in. From January they have really knuckled down and worked hard, to see all of that work on Sunday it was a lump in the throat moment."

The team, whose players range from ages 17 to women in their mid 40's, are only a few months into their first competitive season and have already achieved a major sporting achievement for the town.

Gaz said: "We all knew we had a really good side and had some really good players in there, but to think that within our first five to six games we could win a plate against a team that won the league we are in last year and won this plate we beat them in.

"To beat a team that has been on the go for five, six years is absolutely amazing. Just how far we have grown in the last 12 months is testament to be honest to the hard work that people put in behind the scenes that people don't see."

Gaz mentioned John Roper and Ste Caton who originally set up the ladies team, as well as Gary Murdoch and Graeme Peers for their support, saying without people like these the team 'wouldn't be where they are today'.

And where now ? The sky is the limit for the ladies who have aspirations to compete in the Women's Super League in the future.

Gaz said: "The sky is the limit to be honest, we have got ambitions to be in super league whether that takes us two or three year, we look at teams like Barrow Raiders they are in the super league."

The club are also looking at development pathways for girls and an under 19's team to create a 'constant flow' of ladies coming into the team.
