A MAJOR running festival took place in Workington this weekend, bringing thousands of runners to the area and bringing back the town's first half marathon event in 40 years.
Hundreds of runners descended on Borough Park in Workington on Sunday, August 4 for the Workington Festival of Running, organised by Workington Town Council and Cumbria Athletics Club - with cheers, celebrations and congratulations awaiting the runners as they crossed the finish line.
It was clear to see the delight of all the runners who crossed the line. Helen Cole, 44, who is originally from Portsmouth but now lives in Workington and runs with the Keswick AC, was the first women to finish the 10k race.
Speaking from the finish line, she said: "It's awesome. There was a girl right behind me and I was just thinking, 'stay ahead of her'.
"It's brilliant [to have things like this in Workington] - it's so well organised and it's just really good to get everyone together for some exercise."
Neil Schofield, mayor of Workington said: "The Festival of Running this year has added significance with the addition of the Workington Half Marathon.
"This hasn't happened for 40 years. After speaking with the participants, they all agreed it was a fantastic but challenging course and a true test for them.
"Many different club runners and individuals ran not only the half marathon but the 10k, 5k and the 1k fun run which was an amazing spectacle to see so many people men, women and children - both young and old - descend into the stadium at the same time.
"Many of whom were in fancy dress! Congratulations to the organisers Cumbria Athletics Club and Workington Town Council for hosting and organising a wonderful event.
