RESCUE crews were called to an unmanned, capsized boat spotted off the West Cumbrian coast yesterday (August 7).

Workington RNLI and Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team attended to the scene after a 999 call was made after seeing the boat off Harrington.

Land-based coastguard search teams commenced a shoreline search, while RNLI and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 199 from Prestwick searched the sea.

A local fishing boat responded to a Mayday broadcast, assisting in the search.

With nothing found from the extensive search, no persons reported missing and the state of the boat, it was deemed this had been floating at sea for some time before arriving on the shores of Harrington.

Rescue teams were stood down and the boat was towed back to Workington Vanguard Sailing Club.

The callout was Whitehaven Coastguard's eighth of the week.
