Visiting a foreign country can be a costly endeavour with the booking of flights and hotels as well as the use of spending money making a huge dent in our wallets.

However, there are a number of countries where the pound in your pocket will go a lot further than at home or anywhere else.

Many of these countries boast lower costs of living or have a currency that is much weaker compared to the Pound Sterling used in the UK.

The countries where the pound in your pocket will go a lot further

Here are the countries where the British pound in your pocket will go a lot further, according to Numbeo's Cost of Living Index.

Albania

Located along the Adriatic Sea in Southern Europe, Albania enjoys a number of allures ideal for tourism, including white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and dramatic mountains and cliffs.

The country has even been dubbed the "next Croatia" by many because of its low cost and beautiful coastline. Meals typically cost around £5 per person while a pint of beer will set you back around 60-70p.

Tunisia

Tunisia in North Africa boasts some of the most impressive archaeological sites anywhere in the world as well as luxury hotels.

Despite this, the country has a low cost of living with visitors able to find rooms for under £100 per night. A three-course meal for two people can also be as little as £15.

Portugal

Portugal is sometimes dubbed a 'more affordable' Spain with it long being known as one of the cheapest places you can visit in Western Europe.

Whether you're after a relaxing beach holiday or want to sample some of the nation's wonderful culture, there is something for everyone.

Romania

Well-known for its historic capital Bucharest, Romania is a very affordable holiday destination with rooms being available for under £100 a night and a pint of beer being as cheap as £1.50.

Bulgaria

Moving south, you can experience the various Black Sea beach resorts dotted across Bulgaria's magnificent coast.

With pints costing a little over £1 and a UNESCO World Heritage site being found with Nessebar, the country is a great place to add to your travel list.

Montenegro

Located between Croatia and Albania, Montenegro is a small Balkin country with a lot to offer.

From a quaint cafe culture to sandy beaches, the nation is also a cheap tourist hotspot with a restaurant meal costing as little as £5.
