Rare tin plate toys were among the highest selling lots at an antique sale last week.

Model locomotives, a 140th Anniversary Silver Cross doll’s pram, Meccano sets and static engines were also amongst the top lots at Mitchells Vintage & Antique Toy Sale in Cockermouth.

Noteworthy was a Little’s motor accident demonstration outfit by Charles Thurman & Sons, Carlisle, selling for £1,700.

The package featured a road layout, cardboard buildings, a clockwork bus and pocket toy coach produced in Britain as well as German-made tinplate motorbikes, cars and a van.

Another German tin plate clockwork toy with a Tippco clown on a dog cart fetched £700.

Stuart engines, one electric and four steam-powered, fetched £620.

Three Wrenn 00 gauge boxed steam locomotives sold for £400.

Meccano also performed well with an outfit No. 10 flight of four drawers filled with Meccano parts making £400, and another flight of four drawers selling for £200.

The 140th Anniversary Silver Cross baby Balmoral doll’s pram, among only 140 ever produced, sold for £350 with a unique numbered plaque and essential certificates.

A Rufus Bliss American doll house with a large collection of accessories made £180, and an oversized Charlie Bear dubbed 'Clyde' was snapped up for £150.

Vintage toys included a Bontems style clockwork double singing bird automaton, possibly dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, selling for £240.

Among the more contemporary vintage toys was an early 1960s boxed Schuco 5735 Texi Alfa Romeo convertible which made £280, and a box of play-worn die-cast vehicles, including Dinky and Corgi models, which sold for £380.

More recent toys included a pristine Playstation portable bundle with Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories and five games, fetching £260.

Mitchells is currently welcoming entries for their next Toy Sale early next year, already anticipating a collection of over 300 teddies.
