More A-level pupils in Cumbria achieved A* grades last year, according to new data.

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation reported that 6.5 per cent of the 5,125 A-level students in Cumbria earned at least one A*, slightly up from 6.3 per cent the previous year.

However, this is a significant drop from the 15.9 per cent during the pandemic when teacher assessments determined grades.

Nationally, nine per cent of students received an A*, up from 8.5 per cent the year before, highlighting that Cumbria's students underperformed compared to the national average.

Despite the decrease, this year’s A* rate is the highest since 2010, excluding the pandemic years.

Ofqual’s chief regulator Sir Ian Bauckham told a briefing: “There is no grade inflation this year.

“Standards have been maintained from 2023.

“Any change is largely due to the ability of the cohort.”
