Mountain rescuers were called out for over two and a half hours because a group of walkers, who didn’t bring any maps or smartphones with them for navigation, got lost in the wet and windy night.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team members were deployed on August 25 to Gategill Fell in Blencathra.
A spokesperson from Keswick Mountain Rescue team said the group requested hep after ‘being caught out by strong winds and wet conditions’ during an ascent of Blencathra.
The caller described the group’s position as being on a ridge above Threlkeld, but because they failed to bring maps or a smartphone with them for navigation, an accurate location could not be determined.
Because there are several ridges leading to the summit, the Keswick team started searching for them up the Hall’s Fell and Gategill Fell ridges.
The group, which included several children, were found at Knott Halloo on Gategill Fell and were provided with warm clothes and heat blankets and walked down the hill.
The team thanked Penrith Mountain Rescue Team for being on standby in case the situation escalated.
The callout involved 17 team members and lasted two hours and 34 minutes.
