Over 130 cyclists enjoyed a day in the sun last weekend for the Team Townend Challenge, a charity cycling sportive held in memory of two popular brothers from Cockermouth.

The annual event takes place in memory and celebration of Christian and Nicholas 'Niggy' Townend, who were killed in a road accident while cycling in 2010.

Christian was 29 and Niggy was 21 years old. The 2024 edition of the event took place on September 7 and saw cyclists choose from one of four routes, including a new offroad 'gravel' route.

The event is organised by friends and family of the Townend brothers, and raises money for the road safety charity, RoadPeace.

Since 2010, the Team Townend Challenge has raised over £75,000. Riders enjoyed post-ride refreshments and a charity auction, with many prizes donated by local businesses and cycling shops.

Harry Shepherd, who helps to organise the event, said: "The Team Townend Challenge is about getting people together, remembering our friends, and enjoying a day in the saddle. We're always happy to see familiar faces as well as welcoming new riders to the event. With four routes to choose from, there's a challenge for everyone.

"This was the first time we've held the event in September and we struck lucky with the weather. It was also the first year we had an offroad gravel option, which was a huge success and we hope to do something similar next year."
