A WEST Cumbrian women’s rugby league team have achieved major success in their first competitive season – winning the league at home earlier this week.

The Workington Town Ladies RLFC have won the Women’s Rugby League (league two) with a celebration being held following their final match and 32-30 win over Halifax Panthers at the Fibrus Community Stadium on September 14.

Speaking following the win, head coach Ste Caton said: “It’s a great feeling just to see the progress from where we started a few years ago and then to be in our first competitive season and win the league... it’s a huge achievement.

“I have grown up supporting Workington Town since I was about five. I think that was my first game and just to be involved with the club is a massive pleasure and honour."

The team have been an inspiration for girls’ rugby around the county following their glowing season, with many local youth teams starting girls' sides.

Ste said: “I know there is a lot of youth girls' rugby league teams starting so it’s definitely inspired them. My oldest daughter has started playing off the back of coming to watch Workington Town Ladies last year. I know it’s been a big thing.

“We have got a good atmosphere down at the ground now. There are lasses from as far as Carlisle and Keswick with rugby union backgrounds who say they are enjoying this more at Workington Town. That’s a massive thing for us coaches.”

When asked about the future of the club Ste believes the ‘sky is the limit’. He said: “The sky is the limit for these ladies and with the youth that is coming through from around West Cumbria the sky is the limit. They could go as far as they want.”

Ste praised the assistant coaches at the ladies' team, Gareth Nicholson and Dave Eccleston, for their work throughout the season, as well as team manager Sue Grimley who he said was ‘the rock of the team’.

The ladies are now aiming for the play-offs and a chance at promotion with the semi-final and final taking place in the coming weeks. They play against Sheffield Eagles at the Fibrus Community Stadium on September 29.
