PART of the M6 will be facing overnight closures due to resurfacing work.

National Highways has announced the closures will affect the northbound carriageway from Junction 39 at Shap.

The first closure will be tonight (September 23) from 8pm to 6am, and the second will be tomorrow, September 24, during the same time.

It follows as National Highways is spending £1.7 million resurfacing over seven miles of the northbound carriageway.

Motorists should follow the signed diversion during full carriageway closures via the A6, then the A66 before rejoining the M6 at junction 40.

With a diversion in place through the A6, a spokesperson from Clifton Community Council said: "The council has worked with National Highways to ensure measures are put in place to try and reduce the impact of speeding vehicles overnight along the A6 through Clifton.

"Over the last year, the number of closures for various reasons has increased and we are aware that the next year will see more, so we are working to ensure when planned closures happen some measures are in place to try and reduce the impact on our community.

"Alongside diversion signs along the A6 National Highways will put in place mobile matrix signs telling drivers to slow down through the communities along the A6.

"Police will also be carrying out increased patrols and monitoring of speed overnight along the A6," they said.
