A police inspector has been recognised nationally for his work in road safety.

Inspector Jack Stabler, head of Cumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit, was awarded the Innovation and Excellence award at the UK Road Offender Education (UKROEd) Awards.

The ceremony took place on October 9, in Manchester.

He was put forward for the award by his colleague, Inspector Kim Brown.

She praised his innovative work in setting up the county's Roads Policing Unit and his keen use of data analytics and collaborations with other agencies to improve road safety.

Assistant Chief Constable Jonathan Blackwell said: "Inspector Stabler’s outstanding personal commitment, dedication and drive to improve road safety has been rightly recognised nationally through this award.

"The recognition is a testament to his determination and leadership of our Roads Policing Unit.

"The award not only reflects well on the officer, but the RPU and the Constabulary as a whole.

"It is well deserved."

Inspector Stabler was also acknowledged for his efforts during the Appleby Horse Fair, where he introduced AI cameras at road harm hotspots to catch distracted driving and seatbelt offences.

His team made 40 arrests, seized 24 vehicles, and issued 203 traffic offence reports.

The result was zero fatal or serious injury collisions during the 2024 fair.

Ms Brown said: "The award is thoroughly deserved.

"Inspector Stabler is single-minded in his determination to significantly reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

"Since the introduction of the Roads Policing Unit, which he leads, fatal collisions have reduced by more than 25 per cent and very serious collisions by almost 30 per cent.

"The leadership, innovation and passion for the work which Inspector Stabler demonstrates every day has undoubtedly played an enormous part in these positive results and I congratulate him on behalf of the Constabulary for this recognition."

The UKROEd awards celebrate outstanding contributions to road safety and highlight the dedication and innovation of police officers across the country.
