PLANS have been submitted to Cumberland Council to replace the rotten shopfront of a Maryport store as part of a regeneration scheme.

It is for a shop in Senhouse Street and the project would involve the replacement of the shopfront as well as the windows.

The planning report states: "In 2017/2018 a High Street Action Zone Bid was submitted to Historic England to put money into the town. This was approved as they could see the great potential the town has to offer.

"The shop at 30-32 Senhouse Street was first recognised on the land registry in 1907, however we believe that this may have been built before then.

"The shop at 30-32 was a butcher’s shop at some time and up until very recently was a bathroom shop. We have also found signage from a shoemakers and there is an idea that it may have been used for religious purposes at some point since it was built.

"The building is situated in a conservation area, it is not a grade-II listed building and requires upgrading of the shopfront as part of the regeneration scheme."

According to the report there are currently works underway to build on the site next door, which was Ogni's, and merging in with the Carlton with a plan to offer an events space, art gallery and much more.

It adds: "Due to the location of our property it would be a shame to leave it looking dated and shabby which would not be appealing to the advertisement of the new events building."

The application is currently being considered by planning officers at the council.
