One of 300 gold coins made to mark the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworth's birth is currently on sale for almost £3,500.

The £5 gold proof coin, available on the All Gold Coins website, is one of only 310 issued in 2020 and is made of 22 karat gold.

The coin was number 207 with only 300 produced in this format. It comes in the Royal Mint box of issue with a certificate too. 

It was the first commemoration of William Wordsworth, who was born in Cockermouth and lived in Grasmere, on a UK coin and can be purchased for £3,495.

Another seller on eBay, Rare Coins Collector, has listed the coin for $4,750 which works out at approximately £3,661.73. This has an additional £181.16 shipping fee. 

One side of the coin features the last bust portrait created of Queen Elizabeth II, produced by Cumbrian-born engraver Jody Clark.

The other side shows a dramatic scene of the Lake District with the sun shining through the clouds upon a mountain and lake. This was designed by David Lawrence. 

It includes the words "Nature never did betray the heart that loved her" from the iconic Wordsworth poem Tintern Abbey.

The coin comes with a booklet with information about Wordsworth's life in the Lake District that was developed with the support of the Wordsworth Trust.

Gold proof coins are the highest standard of commemorative coin produced by the Royal Mint.
