FOR this week's Nostalgia edition we'll be taking a look at what was happening in the Workington area in the 1970s.
Five decades have passed since this time and a whole lot has changed both here in Cumbria and the world around us.
This was a time when David Bowie introduced his Ziggy Stardust persona at the second show of the 1972–73 Ziggy Stardust Tour, at The Toby Jug pub, Tolworth, Surrey, the first official gay pride march in London was held, the BBC1 television quiz programme Mastermind was broadcast for the first time, as part of ITV's new afternoon service, the first episode of Emmerdale Farm, a soap opera set in rural Yorkshire, was broadcast on ITV produced by Yorkshire Television, Aardman Animations was founded, women are admitted into the London Stock Exchange for the first time, and Anne, Princess Royal, announced her engagement to Mark Phillips.
It was also a time when Snow Knight won the Epsom Derby at odds of 50/1 ridden by Brian Taylor, McDonald's opened its first UK restaurant in Woolwich, South East London, actor Charlie Chaplin, 85, was knighted by the Queen, Davros first appeared on Dr Who, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail was released in the UK.
These photos show what was happening right here in Workington during this era. We hope that these pictures help to bring back some fond memories for some of you.
