A much-loved restaurant manager is retiring after 47 years of service to a hotel in the Lake District.

Cath Serginson, who has been with The Borrowdale Hotel since she was 22, is also the Lake District Hotel’s longest-serving member of staff.

Her journey started as a waitress at the hotel near Keswick, where she spent a four-month shadowing period learning the ins and outs of the hospitality industry.

She quickly mastered the complex French menus and was promoted to supervisor, known as chef de rang in French tradition, after just a few years.

A significant milestone in her career was in 2008 when the Graves family took over the hotel, coincidentally on her birthday, with Cath ensuring the hotel maintained its reputation for excellent service.

Throughout her career, Cath has welcomed numerous guests, including famous personalities like David Hemmings, Felicity Campbell, and Brendan Foster.

“Over the last 47 years, I have met incredible people, both staff and guests," Cath said.

"It’s been a privilege to serve with and for them.

"Things have changed over the years, and this type of establishment is more accessible than ever for guests to enjoy.

"Moving to the Lake District all those years ago also led me to meet my wonderful husband, Michael, for whom I am forever grateful.”
