A POPULAR  fireworks display took place in a West Cumbrian town over the weekend, as the council thanked the many volunteers who work hard to make sure the annual event can go ahead each year.

Cockermouth Town Council held the town's annual firework display on Sunday, November 3 with many attending the event held in Memorial Gardens.

The fireworks began at 7pm, with a children’s funfair and stalls beginning in the area from around 5pm.

The display is much loved by all who attend with happy attendees leaving positive feedback for the town council.

"Absolutely brilliant night, thank you Cockermouth," said one, while another said: "Fantastic display this evening - bravo to everyone who organised and put this on. Thank you."

The event, which is completely free with donations being welcome, has been of a benefit to local businesses in the town, according to the town's mayor, who has praised the organisation of the event.

Mayor of Cockermouth Richard Watson said: “It was an excellent event helped in no small measure by the mild, dry weather. It was very well attended and afterwards many people I spoke to praised not only the fireworks but the way the whole event was organised.

"Quite a few local shops and cafes stayed open and hopefully they will have benefitted from all the extra people coming into the town.”

The town council has thanked all of the volunteers who help to steward the event, as well as firework supplier PYRO-2000 for the display, which they have now been bringing to Cockermouth for a number of years.

Cockermouth Town Council town clerk, Jane Ollerenshaw said: “It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying themselves. We’ve worked with the award-winning PYRO 2000 for a number of years now to bring these displays, and they never fail to impress.

"We owe special thanks to our fantastic volunteers that come out to help steward the event and keep everyone safe.”
