PROGRESS is being made on the revamp of a west Cumbrian sports centre - as the council prepares to start work on the 'amazing new adventure play centre' that makes up part of the plans.

The Maryport Activity Centre, formerly known as the Wave Centre, has been closed since May - as Cumberland council work on improvements at the centre.

A new adventure play centre for children, revamped Clip n' Climb attraction, versatile studio spaces, a community meeting hub, party rooms, and improved gym facilities will be introduced.

Alongside these, updates are also set to include fresh landscaping, a bicycle hub, a redesigned entrance area, and new office space on the upper level of the centre.

Work is said the be going well, with the council saying that the new adventure play, cafe and the bigger and better gym are starting to take shape.

The new entrance has been opened up which has allowed the interior to be reconfigured, and the exterior landscaping and cycle hub is being put in place.

Flimby-based contractor Thomas Armstrong Construction Ltd Group is carrying out the project, with the firm working to complete the building works, with the hopes of completion early in the new year.

Councillor Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: “Things are really coming together quickly at Maryport Activity Centre.

"The new gym and Clip n’ Climb equipment is installed. Next week, December 2, work starts on building the amazing new adventure play centre.

“The new kitchen and café areas are also taking shape, and the building’s first dedicated changing rooms are being fitted out. Walls are being painted, floors are being laid and, outside, the new entrance is almost finished, with the landscaping well underway.

“We are planning for a great community event in the new year to mark the completion of this flagship project.

“These are really exciting times for Maryport with £12million of regeneration work taking place all around the town.”

At the start of this year hundreds of people took part in a public consultation in which the new name was decided for the former Wave Centre.
