Christmas time is a time for reflection, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the joys of the season. For far too many people, however, it can also be the most dreaded part of the year. The holiday season is a stark reminder of one of the most important missions of our time: to end violence against women and girls and to combat domestic abuse.
In Cumbria last November, 447 domestic violence crimes were recorded in the month, and by December 2023, that number had risen to 518, an increase of 71 crimes and victims.
These shocking figures show, starkly, that we still have much more to do. I know that it is not Christmas time itself that is the problem. Reports of domestic violence can increase due to the extra pressure of excessive alcohol consumption and the whole family being in the house together for long periods of time.
No one should ever have to suffer domestic violence. I want you to know that if you are a victim of domestic violence, or know someone who is, there is support available. Please do not suffer in silence.
If you need support, please call Cumbria's Victim Support 24-hour Hotline 0300 303 0157 or if you cannot call you can report the crime via Cumbria Constabulary's website which is safe and confidential. In an emergency call 999, the police will be there for you. If you visit my website there is a section dedicated to signposting you to local support in your community as well. Cumbria PFCC - domestic-violence - Support
If you are a domestic abuser, let me be clear, in Cumbria you will be caught and you will face justice. This type of abuse will never be tolerated and perpetrators need to know that there is never an excuse for domestic abuse.
