Distington stayed firmly in contention for the Cumbria Men’s League title after a thrilling win over the champions.

They came from behind to beat Walney Central 16-14 and open up a four-point lead.

Walney, however, do have two games in hand but clearly can’t afford another slip.

Beaten by Seaton in the BARLA Cumbria Cup final earlier in the month, Walney were slipping to their first league defeat.

In an entertaining, end-to-end game, well controlled by Peter Gilmour, the visitors had gone in front in the first minute through a penalty by Mark McKinley.

They increased that lead on 12 minutes with a try from Brad Nicholls which McKinley converted.

But two tries inside five minutes midway through the half edged Distington ahead. Gavin Martin and Grant Dryden crossed with Scott George converting the first.

Three minutes before the break Walney regained the lead with a Matthew Holmes try, converted by McKinley.

The second half was desperately close and an intriguing contest was settled by a 64th-minute try by Craig Hodgson, with George’s conversion winning the game for Distington.

Distington’s Man of the Match was Jamie Friel with Dave Warne taking the accolade for the visitors.

While first and second were involved in a head-to-head, so too were third and fourth but this one wasn’t as close.

A remarkable second-half performance from Seaton Rangers turned an 18-16 half-time deficit into a 42-18 winning margin.

It had been nip and tuck in the first half with Mike Fearon, Richard George and Ryan Campbell scoring tries for Seaton, two converted by Fearon.

Barrow Island edged ahead at the break with tries from Sam Jones (2) and Ian Irvine, two converted by Luke Cresswell.

But that was it as far as Barrow Island were concerned. They didn’t score another point as Seaton ran riot.

Jonathan Cameron (2), Liam Wood, Steven Dawes and George scored tries, while Fearon (2) and Miguel Blanco-Charters added conversions.

Glasson came out on top in the Maryport derby, winning 30-22. But that represented a gallant effort by Maryport who battled throughout despite having a seriously weakened side due to injuries.

Glasson had gone in front after 10 minutes with an unconverted try by Tom Dixon. But Maryport came back well to lead on 17 minutes with a try from Ben Waugh, converted by Mark Walker.

By half-time, however, Glasson had established a 20-6 lead, scoring three tries in eight minutes at the end of the half.

Grant Mudie, Danny Barker and Jordan Burns all crossed the Maryport line with Dixon converting two of them.

Maryport, however, could feel pleased with their efforts in the second half as they shaded the 40 minutes 16-10.

Liam Armstrong (47), Gregg Dickinson (75) and Carl Steele (80) scored tries for Maryport, two of which were converted by Walker.

Gary Tierney (62) and Joe Kirkup (72) scored Glasson’s tries with Dixon adding a goal.

There were almost 100 points scored in the South Cumbrian derby as bottom side Roose Pioneers beat Ulverston 52-44.
