Workington Comets brought the curtain down on their best ever season by achieving a spectacular treble with victory in the Championship Shield decider against Lakeside.
Having pulled back 18 points against Scunthorpe Scorpions to clinch the Knockout Cup on Thursday and 10 points when the Hammers came to Derwent Park on Sunday to become SGB Championship league champions for the first time, Workington had a two-point lead to defend to complete the set.
Comets overpowered Lakeside for the second night in a row, adding to their lead with 5-1s in the opening two races before 16-year-old Workington boy Kyle Bickley produced the decisive points again with a fine ride alongside Nicolai Klindt in heat 11 to pip former Comet Richard Lawson in a home 5-1 which made more history.
The feat is even more remarkable given that Comets have raced at the business end of the season without rising star Dan Bewley and captain Ty Proctor and have made life difficult for themselves at every turn with daunting deficits to overcome.
Rasmus Jensen hit the front coming out of the first bend and Rene Bach dived past Richard Lawson on the inside line with the Danish duo untroubled from then on in an easy 5-1 to bump Comets’ lead up to six points.
Bickley was warned for rolling at the start of heat two but he nailed it in the rerun, dominating from start to finish and it took Mason Campton two laps to push past Alfie Bowtell before he swept round Ben Morley on the run to the finish.
The unstoppable Jensen turned on the style again to win heat three but guest Stefan Nielsen was nowhere to be seen in a 3-3 which kept Workington’s lead at 10 points, then the Hammers threatened to come back into the tie with a 4-2 in heat four as Nick Morris left the other three riders standing still but Klindt sneaked into third behind Mason Campton to share the points.
Despite his form there was to be no maximum for Jensen as he was excluded from heat five for destroying the tapes and replaced by Bickley, who proved to be a perfect stand-in as he held off former Comets racer Lawson for three laps and earned second ahead of Nielsen, who bizarrely came off after the race had ended.
Bach had got a beautiful start to heat six but it was for nothing as referee Jim McGregor pulled the race back due to a tapes malfunction.
It didn’t put him off as he stormed away from Morris again in the rerun but it was like musical chairs for second between the Australian and Klindt, with the Hammer the man behind Bach when they crossed the line.
Klindt made the start this time and shut down an attempted pass from Ellis while Bickley looked like joining his team-mate at first but couldn’t make a move stick in a 3-3.
Comets got back to winning ways with a 5-1 in heat eight from Campton and Bach, who were well clear of Wajtknecht within a lap, then Jensen withstood intense pressure from Morris in a Comets 4-2 in heat nine.
The visitors were on a 4-2 for the first lap of heat 10 but Bach showed his class to reel in Newman and slot in behind Campton to protect the hosts’ 18-point lead.
A 5-1 in heat 11 would secure the shield and complete the treble and it was on by the end of the first lap as Klindt and Bickley bolted.
Lawson gave it everything he had but couldn’t pass the 16-year-old in a huge scalp for Bickley which also completed a spectacular piece of history for the club.
A 4-2 for the hosts in heat 12 saw Campton hold off Ellis with Nielsen third before Morris and Lawson earned a consolation 5-1 for the away side in heat 13.
Heat 14 ran with three riders after Bickley missed the two minutes and no-one came in for the rerun but Jensen won with ease ahead of Newman and Bowtell in a 3-3 before a heat 15 with nothing on the line saw Morris and Lawson collect their second consolation 5-1 in three races.
