WORKINGTON Reds boss Lee Andrews says Saturday’s postponement won’t derail their efforts to fight relegation.
Reds’ clash with Mickleover Sports was called off on Saturday afternoon due to heavy rain waterlogging the pitch.
And Andrews insists that although he was disappointed not to build on their momentum, he says they will go again next weekend.
“Of course we would have liked the game to have been on at the weekend, and built on last weekend’s win,” said Andrews. “We had brought some new players in and there is a lot of positivity around the club at the moment.
“We have got a few games to fit in, but we have one rearranged for February and now we have to fit in another three or four in March and Apri. So that should be possible as long as we don’t get many more called off.”
Reds had brought in former Morecambe midfielder Garry Thompson who agreed to join the club on his release from the League Two side.
And the 38-year-old was set to be in the starting line-up on Saturday, with Dean Brotherston also set to take his place on the bench after joining last week.
But Andrews said this would give the new faces a little longer to train with the squad before a match.
“Garry was going to start with Dean on the bench so it was disappointing as they were ready to go but they will have to wait another week now,” said Andrews.
“But they will get another two training sessions with the rest of the squad so that will be beneficial to them.”
Andrews believes that Thompson will be a useful addition to their relegation dogfight, with a host of experience under his belt.
He added: “I think a lot of people might look at him and think at 38 he’s past his best but if you see him then physically you will see that he is really fit and looks after himself.
“With his experience he will be an asset to us, especially because we are in a relegation fight, I think he will be invaluable.”
Thompson also lists Scunthorpe United, Bradford City, Notts County and Wycombe Wanderers as his former clubs in a distinguished career.
Reds will now have a week to prepare for their next game, when they take to the road to head to Grantham Town, another side in the lower reaches of the table.
And another game that Andrews has targeted to try and get his side out of the danger zone.
With not playing at the weekend, Workington are now at least nine points from safety in the Northern Premier League but they do have several games in hand on some of their nearest rivals.
