KESWICK'S sports clubs enjoyed a bumper weekend of success with major achievements in cricket, football and rugby, and a impressive collection of silverware and winners medals heading back to Keswick in the glorious sunshine.
Keswick Cricket Club and Keswick Football Club both had important games on Saturday, with Keswick CC at home to Furness in the Cumbria Cricket League Premier Division, and Keswick FC away at Cockermouth in a derby match which would determine who would be crowned champions of Division One of the Cumberland County League.
In Fitz Park, Keswick CC earned themselves a comfortable win over Furness CC, with captain Will Atkinson leading the batting, and club professional Rishith Upamal turning in superb bowling figures, taking 5 wickets for eighteen runs of just 9 overs.
The cricketers were joined in celebrating their match win by the returning Keswick football team who had triumphed in their match at Highfield, crowned Cumberland Division One champions in a hard fought 1-0 victory with the only goal from Bradley Fearns, with Keswick undefeated in the League all season.
Watching on at the football and then the cricket was Ste Moss, who plays for all three senior men's' teams, but was side-lined last week after the Papa Johns' Semi Final win against West Hartlepool, when his ankle was badly broken late on in the match, but Mossy managed to collect his Keswick FC medal, and cheer on his Keswick CC team mates, albeit on crunches.
As well as collecting their first trophy of the weekend in Cockermouth, Keswick FC also hosted four prestigious Cumberland County Finals in Fitz Park, with the Boys Under 12s and U14s finals on Saturday, and the Girls Under 12s and Under 14s finals on Sunday with wins for Workington Juniors U12s Reds, Stanwix Boys Under 14s, Whitehaven Under 12s Girls and Unisun Athletic Under 14s Girls with the Cumberland FA passing on their 'huge thanks' and appreciation for the 'amazing volunteers' at the Club.
Sunday was another extraordinary day for sport in Keswick, with Keswick CC hosting a NCCA One Day Trophy match between Cumbria and Bedfordshire, Keswick FC Under 16s heading off to Penrith for the Tommy Hall Memorial Trophy Final, hoping to secure a 'double' and a the cup to go with their Penrith & District Under 16s League winners trophy, and Keswick RFC heading over to Darlington for the Papa Johns Regional 2 North Shield Final.
The first result of the day was an emphatic win for Keswick FC Under 16s in a 7-2 victory over Carlisle Galaxy, with the team ending the season as undefeated league champions and Tommy Hall Memorial Trophy winners. Captain Luke Mason netted a hat trick, Jayden Fulton added a brace, and Oliver Armstrong and Oscar Pickering each grabbing a goal, with coach Matty Thomson delighted with the result and very proud of the team for their achievements in the 2023-2024 season.
In the cricket, a busy Fitz Park saw Cumbria pull off a very good four wicket victory over Bedfordshire, with Cumbria captain Michael Slack putting in a captain's innings, and Keswick batsman Greg Cameron adding an explosive 28 runs to bring home the win with Slack.
The last result of the day was the news from Darlington Arena that Keswick RFC had won the Papa Johns Shield, defeating Olney RFC 20-17 in the Final, with another battling and nerve shredding display, with Kieran Mewse kicking the final points for another Keswick victory, and Mossy collecting another medal.
