The Cumbria Rams rugby team is set to be re-established.

The Rams, a significant part of the Cumbrian rugby scene for more than 30 years, were established by John Cusack of Cockermouth RUFC and were awarded an RFU President award in 2008.

The honour was not only for the team's role in keeping men playing the sport but also for raising £40k for local charities.

Now, 16 years later, Chris Wright, Dale Pope and Craig Muller from Cockermouth RUFC are among those spearheading the Rams' revival.

The team, after playing under the banner of Allerdale Barbarians, is reforming as the Cumbria Rams.

They are gearing up to compete in the National Vets Festival 2024, set for Saturday, September 28, at Old Reigations RFC, Surrey.

The squad will be raising funds for the Cumbria Wooden Spoon Charity, which helps provide opportunities for disadvantaged young people.

Chris Wright of Cockermouth RUFC, Allerdale Barbarians and now the Cumbria Rams, said: "As a young player breaking into Cockermouth Wasps senior set up, John was an inspiration still playing rugby in his colourful boots at full-back.

"We are delighted that Cockermouth RUFC is again at the forefront of this programme, none of us have yet gone for the pink or yellow boots John used to play in but we certainly hope to do a fine a job as John did with this programme."

As part of the team's fundraising efforts, they have managed to garner support from several local businesses that have sponsored parts of the team jersey, making significant contributions to the funds.

Furthermore, Cockermouth Round Table and James Hunter Joinery have provided support for the team's travel costs while Cockermouth Travel sponsored a Cumbria tie for each player.
